The face is a site of politics. The representation of the face is coded and laden with preconceptions, presumptions of virtuosity, beauty, and aspiration.
The smiling pot is based on a project that aims to distill the iconography of the face with respect to the facial features of the global majority. A concept that aims to question the neutrality of the way in which we depict faces and question the vocabulary of imagery we draw upon to depict faces.
Taking inspiration from West African ceramics in where vessels serve a spiritual function, the smiling pot builds on a tradition of anthropomorphism in pottery as a vehicle to embody an energy, intention or virtue.
That given, The Smiling Pot aims to draw on a lineage of global majority cultures. Distilling the face to an essential iconography that sidesteps a Eurocentric neutrality, while playing with contemporary and loving forms.
Given this, pieces are designed to be potent and embody calm and care - in essence, to be vessels for happiness and joy.
